Featuring the following acts and participatory events:

A short live performance based on love by dance troupe Trip the Dark Fantastic.

A talk on love with Chris Bucci, creator of the notorious Oregon Heart Sticker.

Skype conversation with the Love Artist Kathe Izzo, who travels the world as lover, writer, healer, participator, aesthetic & pulmonary revolutionary. She has committed herself, through her original True Love Project, to love the world "one person at a time for one hour, one day, one afternoon or early morning" to the best of her ability "unconditionally and with unmitigated passion" in continuous art and ceremonial settings since 2001. www.schoolofinvisiblearts.com

Speed Ideating with Ariana Jacobs: brief participatory facilitated conversations, where we will discuss our curiosities, questions and beliefs surrounding love.

Eat baked goods and drink kombucha, made with love by Ariel Kempf, Crystal Baxley and Ally Drozd.

Project Grow’s Community Jam Session installation: Documentation of a ‘sheltered workshop’ facility for adults with intellectual disabilities local fruit tree gathering event, all who attended made fruit jam as an act of love.

Gearing Up for an Event on LOVE!

Dear Friends of Public Social University,

We have wanted to facilitate an event on LOVE for some time now, and I am excited that it is coming to fruition. The more I learn and talk about love, the more I am able to recognize its connection and relevance to my life. We have scheduled our LOVE event as the first show to take place at Field Work- a new artistic learning space, which exists on 10th and Jefferson on the day of October 1st @ 7pm.

BUT, I am certain that I am not interested in doing this event alone. For this event to be as polished and strong as I envision, I will need help organizing the event, providing encouragement and support, and getting the word out to the greater public. I have done Public Social University events before, and know that they work much more smoothly with shared ownership and commitment.

Also, I am accepting submissions for people who you might know who explore love in aspects of their lives. Do you have any suggestions or areas of interest for an event such as this?

Please inform me of your interest in collaboration by Sunday, September 5th.

FINAL survival course!

Final Survival class at The Waypost tomorrow, 4-5:30pm: Surthrival sandwich featuring a 20 minute talk with Sasha who recently walked from LA to Texas, Greg with a short tai-chi and herbal medicine talk, followed by a survival lecture by Mathew, an Iraq war vet.

Information about Sasha:

Sasha has been an activist for 10 years. He has recently completed a 5-state speaking tour with New York's Global Justice for The Animals and The Environment organization, and is currently co-editor for the quarterly Earth First Journalin Tuscon, AZ.

He will be speaking about the his experience with environmentalism and about survival as a mindset, especially in relation to queer and minority identity.

The survival course 2010 is now well underway at The Waypost, all sessions have been truly wonderful. If you have not yet had a chance to attend, you can catch our two last sessions on July 17th and 24th.

We are excited to present this Saturday, July 17th, a talk with Matthew Geiger. Mathew will be presenting the basics of survivalism, including a tutorial of which helpful supplies should be made available at home and in the car during survival situations.

Part two of this course includes a lesson plan sent to me from a friend who can't make it to facilitate himself. Together we will be heading to the bluffs for his exercise on nature survival followed by a discussion and pic nick. Please be prepared with your bike, or some other form of transportation, and a snack to share.

CALL FOR PRESENTERS/PARTICIPANTS/FACILITATORS, for surTHRIVEal July 24th:

We are now gathering presenters for our final survival course, which we have named, surTHRIVEal. Public Social University is currently looking for 8 people to give a surthrival talk or skill in 10 minutes Saturday, July 24th. To us, this entails satisfying our biological needs, while making ourselves better–emotionally and otherwise. Some areas of interest might include, but are not limited to: relationship survival skills, a live food cooking class, campfire cooking, love and protest, herbal medicine, and renewable energy.

More about survivalist Mathew Geiger:

Mathew served in the United States Navy from 2002-2008 where he received specialized training in Advanced Electronics, Air Traffic Control, and Communications Systems. In addition to his technical duties, he was qualified and assigned to the Shipboard Security Forces and In-port Emergency Team. Qualification for these duties included testing for competence in:

- Close-Combat Engagement Tactics
- Firefighting
- Response to Chemical, Biological, and Nuclear attacks
- First Aid
- Survival At Sea
- Weapons Safety

Matthew Geiger was honorably discharged from the United States Navy at the rank of Petty Officer Second Class and is currently working as an Engineer at Intel in Hillsboro, Oregon.

A description of the second exercise:

objective: Nature has needs. primarily it needs to survive and grow, in this lesson the observer will sit quietly and watch the natural world around them. It will be necessary to select a place that is active, but removed from cars and the mechanized world. Take a bike ride just outside of Portland. Find a forest or field that has lots of birds singing. Bring food and snacks appropriate for sharing with wildlife. be a part of nature. Observe your surroundings, and after silent observation discuss what you feel from nature. What does it tell you?

On June 19th, Brad Swet will facilitate a course in creative problem solving. It will address what we can do if we do not have our trusty pocket knife or lighter with us and need to build shelter or find food and water. We will also be having a roundtable discussion about what we would like to learn regarding survival and who might help us do so. Some areas of interest might include learning about edible plants, lighting a fire without a match, city survival, and wilderness survival skills. What would you like to learn about survival? What could you teach? The survival course will include field trips in Portland and surrounding environs, and will be absolutely free.

Updated information will appear here, so be sure and stay tuned if you cannot make it to the first SURVIVAL event on June 19th.
